Temporomandibular joint disorder or typically referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD is a common complaint of stressed New Yorkers. Symptoms include pain and clicking in the jaw, pain in the neck and headaches. TMJ disorders can have many different causes which include stress, trauma from an impact or fall, whiplash injury, grinding of the teeth, clenching of the jaw, or improper chewing to name a few.
The jaw, or mandible, attaches to the skull via the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and is surrounded by various different muscles that work in tandem to coordinate opening and closing of the mouth. The TMJ is one of the most frequently used joints in the body, which allows you to speak, chew, and swallow.
Treatment by the chiropractor includes myofascial release (MRT) to break up the contraction of the muscles of mastication, accompanied by gentle adjustments. Chiropractic care can help many patients eliminate the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders.
